5 Ways of Bringing Your Bathroom Up to Date

Total bathroom renovations are expensive, with bills of £5000 to completely renovate a bathroom not being exceptional. If you can’t afford a whole new bathroom, or live in rented property, that doesn’t mean that you’re stuck with what you’ve got. There are lots of ways of updating your bathroom without spending a fortune. Just make sure that if you’re renting you run it past your landlord first.

1. Paint the Tiles

Tiles, especially patterned ones, can quickly look dated. If you’re stuck with some very dated tiles then painting them is a great way of making the look modern. Start by cleaning the tiles thoroughly with sugar soap and allow them to dry. Next, use a primer on top of the tiles to ensure that the new colour doesn’t just peel off. Let that dry too. Finally, use one of the specialist tile paints on the market to paint over the primer and give your tiles their new look. Tile paint doesn’t have to be white, but sticking to neutrals will give the most modern appearance.

2. Get Some Artwork

Bathrooms are often neglected when it comes to decoration. A great piece of brightly coloured artwork will transform the look of your bathroom and make the morning shower a more pleasant experience. Another trick which works very well in a smaller bathroom is to buy an oversized mirror with an ornate frame and hang it over the sink. It will bounce light around and is bang on trend too.

3. Create a Diversion

If you have tiles or a floor which you really hate, that’s the first thing which will catch your eye when you walk into the room. Try to trick your eye into looking at something else by adding colour or interest elsewhere. Get a brightly coloured new roller blind for the window, add a beautiful feature wallpaper above outdated tiles, or swap an old fashioned shower curtain for a screen.

4. Think About Wallboard

One of the reasons bathrooms can look dated and tired is because the grout between the tiles has started to crack and grey. If you’re at the stage where you have no option but removing the tiles, think about replacing them with waterproof wallboard instead. This doesn’t need grouting, and is much quicker and easier to install. Look for a modern, bright finish to totally transform your bathroom.

5. Get New Towels

If your towels have seen better days, a fluffy new set can make your bathroom seem altogether more luxurious and modern. If your bathroom is predominantly black and white, you have a great deal of flexibility over what colour you choose as an accent. If you’re stuck with coloured tiles or patterned walls, then the safest choice for any bathroom towels is plain white. Fold them neatly, or roll them for an even more up to date feel. The trick is keeping the bathroom that way – no easy task when you have children or are in a houseshare.
