Dismantle your old kitchen safely and easily in ten easy steps
Step 1 - Plan ahead
There is no point in dismantling your kitchen if you have nowhere to put the old cabinets and appliances.
Order a skip and arrange collection of any old appliances, especially fridges which need to be disposed of carefully. Your local council can help with this.
Step 2 - Turn Off The Utilities
Turn off the water, power and gas mains.
Make sure the family know that you are working on the kitchen and not to turn on taps for example.
Stick post-it notes around the house reminding them you are working on the kitchen.
Step 3 - Clear your workspace.
Take all the contents of the cupboards out of the kitchen and store well away from the work area. This prevents any contamination of food and gives you the space you need to work.
Step 4 - Disconnect appliances
Disconnect your appliances and move them into another room if possible. A clear workspace will make your job so much easier.
Step 5 - Optimise working space
As you dismantle, remove the items from your space. Stack cupboard doors outside or use the skip.
Get help so that as you dismantle the cupboards, your helper can be removing them.
Step 6 - Disconnect the plumbing
Make sure that you disconnect any plumbing which feeds the sink and taps. You might need to drain out some residual water from the pipes.
Make sure you leave the waste trap in place as you will need this for your new sink.
Step 7 - Remove the worktops
Be careful – they can be much heavier than they look. You will probably have to unscrew the worktops from any holding plates.
It might be easier to saw them into more manageable chunks.
Step 8 - Remove The Wall Cabinets
Next, remove the wall cabinets.
Take your time and remove each cabinet panel one at a time. This means they can be stacked neatly in the skip and this will save lots of space.
Step 9 - Turn The Water Valves Off
Make sure the water valves are turned off or use stop nuts, clean up and make a cup of tea.
