Being able to fit kitchen taps can be an essential home improvement skill, particularly if your taps are broken rather than simply leaking or dripping. Remember, you can always use the services of a local plumber if you decide this job isn't for you.
Or you may want to replace bland taps and bring new life to your kitchen.
If you are unsure of anything listed below, contact a local tradesperson for advice.
To be able to carry out this reasonably simple task, you’ll need to know what materials and tools you will need.
Materials needed to fit a kitchen tap
- Tap Splitter tool
- Tube Spanner/Spanner
- A new tap
Now you are ready to fit the new tap.
Follow the simple steps below, and for advice, contact a qualified tradesman.
Getting started fitting kitchen taps
Step by step
- First, isolate the water supply in the house. This is essential if you don’t want to get water everywhere
- Remove everything from underneath the kitchen sink. This will allow you to reach the tap connections
- Loosen the nuts that are holding the current tap in place, using your spanner
- Pull the tap out of the top of the sink
- Clean around the area that the old tap was connected, removing all debris and stains
- Place the new tap into the holes of the old tap
- Use the rubber washers and nuts that are supplied with the new tap to connect it back to the water pipe, underneath the sink
- If you plan to use the old metal pipes, it is worth replacing the fibre washers for new ones
- You may now turn the water back on, and test for any leaks, whilst making sure it all functions properly
Fitting a tap can be strenuous, but if you follow the steps above, it should make it relatively stress-free. Remember for help and advice, contact local plumbers to compare quotes.
