How To Replace Roof Tiles

Roofer workingAs the autumn and winter months are almost upon us, it is time to think about taking preventative measures to ensure your home is protected from the oncoming ailments, including the wind and rain.

One of the most effective ways to do this is to check your roof tiles are in place and free from damage, otherwise this can cause leakages and draughts.

Any missing or damaged tiles should be replaced straight away and although it may seem like a difficult task, it is actually relatively easy, as long as you’re not afraid of heights.

If you are, it may be a good idea to call in the help of a roofing specialist or someone willing to undertake the task for you.

If you are brave enough to take on the task yourself, these simple steps should help ensure you make a good job of it.

1 Tile Type

It may seem obvious but it is imperative that you check the type of tile you need before you go on the hunt for a replacement.

There are so many styles and types of tiles around that it can be confusing but these will need to match up if you don’t want to cause damage to the roof.

Not only this, but it will also look unsightly if the tiles don’t match together seamlessly.

If you are in any doubt about the type of tile you need, check with a roofing specialist who will be in a better position to offer advice.

2 Equipment

In order to get on the roof and carry out the tile replacement safely, you will need the use of a ladder and maybe even some climbing ropes to undertake the job.

This is especially the case if the roof is slippery as you could easily fall and cause yourself some damage.

You will be working at height so always take precautions and ensure you have the necessary equipment to perform the job efficiently.

3 Overlapping Roofing Tiles

Prior to placing the new tile down, you should check that the surrounding files are not overlapping and preventing you from getting to the one you need to replace.

At this point, you may want to use some timber to hold the tiles up and a brick trowel can be useful for lifting up the damaged tile.

4 Placing New Roof Tiles

The hard work is almost over, all you need to do now is use your brick trowel for placing your new tile down, ensuring there is no overlapping of the surrounding files.

Check that the new tile and any surrounding are fitted securely and safely and also have a look around to ensure no other tiles are damaged.

It can sometimes be easy to miss cracks on tiles and this can really cause havoc during the winter months so another check can be very useful.

If you need to replace any tiles, just simply repeat the process for your new tiles and you should be ready to deal with any weather conditions.
