Tips For Taking Care Of The Garden Before You Go On Holiday

It is the time of year when some of us choose to take a break away from home with the family.

But if you have a summer break planned this year then it is worth spending a little extra time taking care of the garden before you go.

A few garden care tips will ensure that all of your hard work isn’t overturned and it won’t be a heaving mess when you return.

Here are ten gardening tips to ensure that your garden is taken care of before you go away on holiday;

  1. The last thing you want to return to is an over grown lawn so lower the lawn mower blades a little more than you normally would be careful though not to take all of the grass up. This will not only help with avoiding coming home to a meadow but a good mow every now and again will keep you lawn healthy.
  2. If you are considering planting then try to do it before you go away.   Can you imagine the enjoyment of coming back to beautiful new flowers that were just seedlings before you went away?
  3. Try to remove all weeds by hand, also treat the infected area with weed killer, this will ensure that when you’re back they also haven’t developed into a meadow of weeds and will be long gone.
  4. No matter what the weather is forecast while you are away it is important to heavily water your garden, perhaps a little more than you usually would. The last thing you want is to come back to wilting flower beds.
  5. Move potted plants to shady areas, this is because excess water will cause them to get out of control – it is also handy if you’re neighbours or family members are coming to water them for you if they are all in the same place.
  6. This may seem a little cruel perhaps but to avoid excessive intake of water and nutrient remove flowers and buds from plants. The plant is likely to have developed buds again before you return home.
  7. Avoid feeding any plants before you go – you need your plants to grow slowly whilst you are away – a boost in nutrients can cause them to grow rapidly.
  8. If you have plants in a greenhouse then place capillary matting soaked in water under the pots.
  9. Install a drip irrigation to grow bag crops this will ensure regular watering.
  10. Ask a neighbour or relative to drop by whilst you are away to check everything is ok.

It will be very worthwhile taking care of a few gardening tasks before you go away to ensure that you come back home to the beautiful garden it was before you went.
