What’s The Next Big Kitchen Colour Trend?

Grey and white kitchens have dominated the kitchen showrooms for several years, pushing aside the wooden or coloured kitchens which were so popular in the past. But as with everything in design, fashions change. So could grey and white kitchens be on the way out? And if so, what colours should you be looking at instead?

Green Kitchen Trend

Many of the design experts are predicting that one of the big colour trends for kitchens in 2020 is deep, forest green. Green is certainly a dramatic choice, but a forest green kitchen cabinet coordinates perfectly with lighter coloured worksurfaces, and wood flooring. It’s a way of injecting a bit of colour into the kitchen even if you don’t want to go to the expense of replacing all the cupboards; most existing units can be easily overpainted with a deep green shade.

Navy Blue?

Navy blue has been trying to replace grey are the nation’s favourite kitchen colour for a while, and is 2020 the year when it will take top spot? Navy is so popular given that it’s easy to match it with some of the metallic trends currently so in fashion. Navy and copper is a modern look, and navy and brass gives a more traditional feel. The key to making a dark blue kitchen work for you is keeping the rest of the items light and bright; a white or very light grey worktop and tiles will show off the dark cabinets best.

Can Pastels Work in the Kitchen?

Pastels and ice-cream shades of mint green, bubblegum pink and lemon yellow might seem a bit old fashioned, but can be a good way of getting a bit of colour into the kitchen, especially if the majority of the units and worktops are white. A coloured kitchen island is certainly a talking point, or why not replace upper or lower cabinet doors with pastel-coloured ones? If that seems a step too far then keep the kitchen as it is and use some pastel shades of paint to brighten the space up. Paint is a lot cheaper to change than a whole kitchen too.

Copper Accents

Many homeowners are ditching the chrome or brass in the kitchen and replacing with copper instead. Copper is warm and natural, and works well with a wide range of different colours in the kitchen. Changing the handles on kitchen cabinets, taps or light switches is a quick way to update the look of your kitchen. If you have copper pots and pans, keep them out on display rather than hiding them away in the cupboards.

Reclaimed Wood

Wood never really goes out of fashion in the kitchen, but the current trend is away from brand new into reclaimed. There is a wide range of ways to use reclaimed wood in the kitchen, from chunky shelves made from railway sleepers to having a whole kitchen made from old flooring. If that’s a bit beyond your budget, buy into the look with a reclaimed wood chopping board or place mats.
