Before we know it, the winter months will be upon us and this means keeping safe, warm and protected against the ailments.
Not only is it time to invest in some warm, winter clothes and put away the summer wear for another year, it is also a time to think about preparing your home for the new season.
It is a good idea to make your preparations early, so you don’t get any unexpected shocks when it finally arrives.
We never really know what the winter will bring, so it is important to consider the different weather conditions and the best ways to deal with these to stay safe and warm.
Flooding
Last year flooding caused many families to be evacuated from their homes and it also led to a lot of damage, not to mention the cost of replacing the interior of the home.
Although flooding can be difficult to predict and in many ways, difficult to prevent, there are ways you can try to reduce flooding and the damage it may cause.
Devising a flood prevention plan can be an efficient way of minimising your risk.
This may include steps such as checking for missing slates on the roof to prevent leakage and ensuring any cracks or gaps are filled in the building.
If you do this well before winter arrives, the chances of flooding affecting your building will be significantly reduced.
Freezing
The freezing weather will put you at risk from more colds and flus, but in addition to this, it can also be the cause of flooding and the collapse of different parts of the building.
When air vents are blocked, this puts extra weight on the area and can make it more likely to snap.
The best way to deal with this is to ensure air vents are clear, prior to the winter season arriving.
Windy
The windy weather can be dangerous and quite scary so it is important to take measures to minimise your risk of this causing damage to your home.
Inspect your building for loose tiles and slates and rectify these if need be.
It can be a little depressing to bring the summer furniture back indoors for another year but believe it or not, these can end up blowing right into your neighbour’s garden if you’re not careful.
The safest measure is to keep any equipment, including furniture, trampolines etc. indoors during winter, as sadly, it is unlikely you will get to use them again for a while anyway!
All Weather
Whether the winter weather is extreme or not, there will still be a massive drop in the temperature so you will need to take measures to keep your home warm and comfortable.
This may include ensuring your loft insulation is sufficient and you may want to think about leaving your heating on at a low setting all day, so you return to a lovely, warm house.
As long as you stay safe and plan in advance, you will be able to handle anything the winter has in store.
