How Long Should a Bathroom Refit Take

How long should a bathroom refit take?

When you have a major refit to do on any room in the house, you can expect it to take some time. Each room will have spent years being what it is, and the work involved in completely remodelling the thing can be significant. When it comes to bathrooms, things are no different. Bear in mind that this is a room that gets a lot of traffic and usage on a daily basis, at least twice a day, and you’ll understand that this takes effort when it comes to refitting.

We are going to assume that we are interested in a situation that demands a complete refit. In that case, the following timeline and work rate applies. Basically, if you’re going to start again, it's going to take a lot of time.

Demolishing

Presuming you are thinking of demolishing the room and starting from scratch, you’re looking at a two day timetable right there. That also assumes you have all the right tools for the job, as well as people who know how to use them. Two days is a reasonably conservative estimate. Work harder and that timeframe is reduced.

If the structure of the room is sound, you shoudln’t need any major carpentry. However, if there are issues here, you can add another two days on top of all of that.

Plumbing

If you are moving things around, such as the toilet and bath, you are going to be spending a couple of days with new plumbing. This is also not always possible, some properties require extensive work just to allow new plumbing to be fitted. If all goes smoothly, we are saying two days for that.

Electrics will bring you the same time sink. The initial stage (where electrics are run but not ‘plugged in’) should take you one day, and if it goes to two, that will only be because of the complex nature of the job, or the quality of the person doing the work.

Then the ‘wall work’ takes place, where walls are all replaced or set up, and after that comes the job of making sure the room will look how you want it to.

The good news is that this is a refit. This means that painting the walls is relatively simple. The newness of the room means there is little need for masking tape.

When it comes to tiling though, you will have to make a decision on how much tiling you need to do. Tiling can take a day to get right (depending on how much you are doing) and then you need to add in the hours required afterwards for things to dry.

The floor

The flooring can be relatively simple too. You’re looking at getting the flooring down in a morning or an afternoon. It's a small space and doesn’t require a large amount of work. The key here is accuracy though, so whoever is doing the flooring cannot rush it.

After that, you’re just making sure plumbing and electrics are in and connected.

All in all, as long as you have a good team on the job and you don't meet with too many problems, we can see you doing a refit in a week.

That’s a full seven days though.
