Stonework and Stone Cladding

Stone can be used for a variety of things in construction. From use as a decorative veneer (cladding) to making up part of a building’s actual structure, there are various types of stone for different uses. For use as floors, walls, tiles, or cladding, different varieties of stone offer varied advantages and disadvantages.

Types of Stone

The composition of slate tiles is almost the same as sandstone, as they are comprised of both silt and clay. Slate is ideal for use as a flooring and roofing material.

Limestone can vary when it comes to its density and toughness, some of which are almost as strong as granite, and can be used for stone flooring and wall tiles.

Another strong stone is travertine which is not a common as many other well-known stones like limestone and granite.

This sedimentary rock is comprised layers of calcite which take on a natural honeycomb structure which in turn makes it a strong material perfect for tiles.

If you are looking for a stone for your bathroom or kitchen, then marble would be the perfect choice. Marble stone is created by immense heat and pressure so that it can withstand the wear and tear that happens in the busiest places of the home.

For flooring in hallways and kitchens, granite is the best option as it can withstand heavy footfall and can be easily maintained with polish and sealant.

Sandstone, which is generally known to be made up of cemented grains of sand, is perfect for both walls and floors. Some of the compounds that can make up sandstone include calcite, gypsum or iron.

Stone Cladding

Natural stone buildings are often quite expensive and take a long time to construct. So, stone cladding is often a great alternative as it can replicate the look of a natural stone building without the expensive cost and time-consuming process. Stone cladding imitates brick or natural stone by cutting small, thin pieces of cladding and then attaching it to walls or flooring to create the appearance of natural stone.

Stone cladding is also great for flooring or as part of stone clad accent walls but is most used as part of fireplaces as it is easier to create the look of a stone fireplace without fully replacing the fireplace which can become costly. Stone cladding works well in interior design as it is lighter than real stone, so it can be affixed to walls and fireplaces without the worry that it will be too heavy.

How much does it cost to install stone cladding?

The cost of installing stone cladding depends on the size of your home and the stone you choose. However, an average cost for both stone and labour can range between £1500 to £3000. Stone cladding is an expensive project so make sure that you hire a professional to install the cladding correctly to make it safe and long lasting.
